NAC to get multi-million dollar transformation

The National Arts Centre is getting a new multi-million dollar look thanks to the federal government.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, who oversees the National Capital Commission, and Heritage Minister Shelly Glover announced that the $110-million overhaul to the NAC will be finalized by 2017.

The redesign of the NAC will feature a new entrance on Elgin Street, as well as an expansive glass atrium covering the front and side of the building, according to a press release.

The NAC first opened in 1969 to commemorate Canada’s 100th birthday but delays in construction pushed the opening back an additional two years, according to its official website.

The NAC welcomes more than 1.2 million visitors each year, the release reported.
