Stormy weather causes over 130 car accidents

The snowy weather on Monday caused 135 vehicle collisions starting at 5 a.m., according to Ottawa police reports.

Commuters drove through stormy winter conditions this morning with drifting snow causing collisions.

On an average day in the city, Ottawa police say 50 collisions are reported in a 24-hour period. By noon Monday, there had already been 78 collisions, according to the Ottawa police.

“On average we get 50 but that number is tripled on a snowy day,” said Const. Marc Soucy.

He stresses that people need to be careful and slow down when driving on snowy days.

“People don’t slow down because they trust their winter tires too much,” said Soucy. “They don’t give themselves enough space between cars and forget that the speed limit is there for clear days, not windy, snowy ones.”
