Tractors and cows block streets downtown

Canadian dairy farmers brought their tractors to Wellington Street to rally against theTrans-Pacific Partnership on Sept. 29
A long line of tractors blocked traffic along Bank Street Tuesday morning, slowly making their way to Parliament Hill as part of a protest by Canadian dairy farmers.

The farmers are opposing the Trans-Pacific Partnership, an international free-trade deal, which could open up to 10 per cent of the Canadian dairy market to American imports. The TPP would not secure similar access for Canadian farmers in the American market.

Canadian International Trade Minister Ed Fast will meet with negotiators representing the 11 other Pacific Rim countries involved in the deal in Atlanta on Wednesday.

The traffic disruptions reportedly stretched from Walkley Road to Wellington Street, with the parade ending at Parliament Hill.  Wellington Street is currently closed between Kent Street and Elgin Street.

Among the dozens of tractors, a small herd of dairy cows were also present at the rally.
