Teen dead in Ottawa’s 20th homicide of 2016

A 17-year-old boy was killed Tuesday night during a shooting in Hintonburg.

The shooting took place at Bayswater Avenue near Laurel Street at 10:40p.m., Dec. 6, according to the Ottawa Police.

The police arrived to the scene after receiving numerous 911 calls by local residents. The victim, Leslie Mwakio, was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and died shortly after.

Mwakio was shot through the driver-side window of a silver Jeep Patriot.

A nearby resident and member of the Hintonburg Community Association Jay Baltz tweeted photos of the damaged vehicle.

Baltz continued to tweet photos of the crime scene the following day.

The incident took place nearby Vibe Restaurant and Lounge where police spoke briefly to Vibe’s manager Sam Jahantab and customers Tuesday night.

In a recent Hintonburg community safety meeting, residents expressed concerns about the restaurant.

There is no evidence of a relationship between Mwakio and Vibe. Kitchissippi Coun. Jeff Leiper urged residents Wednesday morning to wait for the investigation to conclude.

“We don’t know whether it’s connected to the Vibe lounge or not — residents are drawing their own conclusions. It’s something that obviously I have to explore over the next couple of days,” Leiper said.

This marks Ottawa’s 20th homicide this year — almost triple the seven homicides in 2015, which was seven.

Homicide reports haven’t been this high in Ottawa since 1995, with 25 homicides documented.

The investigation is ongoing and the Ottawa Police are asking anyone with information regarding the crime to call Ottawa’s Major Crime Unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5493. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers.
