Thomas McVeigh was elected as the new president of the Centretown Citizens Community Association at the annual general meeting Tuesday night.

At the corner of Somerset West and Booth streets, a vacant lot covered by dirt sits beside a brick building stained with ash – the site of a 2005 fire that killed five people. Although the deadly blaze happened eight years ago, it established an annual program performed by Ottawa Fire Services called the WakeUP Campaign, where firefighters go door to door, encouraging residents to install, test and ensure their smoke alarms are operating properly.

The Rideau Centre’s recently announced expansion plan, a massive, $360-million investment aimed at making room for major retailers such as Nordstrom, Victoria’s Secret, and Quebec-based Simon, has nearby Centretown business districts cheering the potential new infusion of downtown shoppers.

Local citizens and environmental groups in Ottawa are stepping up their opposition to TransCanada’s proposed oil pipeline being planned to cross the Rideau River in the south part of the city.
