Rideau Canal skating season ends

The National Capital Commission has called an end to the 44th Rideau Canal skating season.

The official end comes after the NCC announced on Monday that the Skateway was temporarily closed. They were hoping to reopen to skaters after a few days of cooler temperatures.

This season lasted longer than any of the last six, with the canal remaining open for 71 days from Dec. 31, 2013 to March 11, 2014.

This winter allowed visitors to lace up for 58 skating days, which is the longest skating season since 2009.

According to the NCC, the world’s largest skating rink saw more than 1.2 million visitors this year.
