Goon sought by police after failed hockey stick robbery

Only in Canada, eh? In what could be the most Canadian robbery Ottawa will see this year, a male suspect tried to rob Kars Confectionery on Kent Street with a hockey stick last week.

The suspect, wearing a balaclava and carrying a hockey stick, entered the convenience store around 6:40 p.m., according to Ottawa police Staff Sgt. Michael Haarbosch.

The man headed straight to the cash register and pointed his “weapon” at the storeowner, demanding cash.

The attempted robbery was cut short when the storeowner decided to turn the flow of the game.

“The storeowner grabbed the hockey stick at that point, and the suspect fled," Haarbosch said.

"He took off running, empty-handed "

The store owner, Jim Kargakos, chased the suspect briefly but gave up the pursuit after about half a block.

According to Haarbosch, hockey sticks aren’t a common weapon used in robberies.

“It’s the first one in recent memory that I can recall,” he said.

“It’s not what we typically see,” he added with a laugh.

Nobody was injured during the attempted robbery.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male standing 5 feet10 inches tall with a slim build, according to a police press release.

The suspect was dressed in black and wore a balaclava during the robbery, the press release said.
