City council votes to terminate Plasco deal

Ottawa city council voted to end its partnership with Plasco but taxpayers may still have to pay for decommissioning the site.

Wednesday’s decision is not a done deal. The city must now ask the court for permission to terminate the agreement because Plasco is under creditor protection.

The decision came after the company missed three deadlines to come up with financing plans for a waste-to-energy plant that would burn garbage and generate electricity for Ottawa. The company had until Dec. 31, 2014 to raise enough money to build the plant.

The 20-year contract was signed in 2012 for $180 million.
