Parliament Hill shooter motivated by Canadian troops overseas

RCMP showed the manifesto recorded by the man responsible for the death of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo in the October shooting on Parliament Hill in Centretown to MPs Friday morning.

The video was made before the attack on Oct. 22, 2014 and was released to the public on March 6, 2015. In the video recorded on his cellphone, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau said he was motivated by Canada’s presence in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Canada’s officially become one of our enemies by fighting and bombing us and creating a lot of terror in our countries and killing us and killing our innocents,” he said in the video. “So just aiming to hit some soldiers just to show that you’re not even safe in your own land, and you gotta [sic] be careful.”

Bob Paulson, the RCMP commissioner, announced that 18 seconds were edited out of the video since the RCMP is still investigating whether Zehaf-Bibeau had any help from others in preparing the attack.
