Clarifying Kent traffic calming

I want to take this opportunity to clarify some information presented in your article on Kent St. in the January 26th, 2001 edition of Centretown News.

The article lacks any of the history of the project, which included months of public consultation to discuss the needs and concerns of the community, while maintaining the pre-construction traffic capacity on Kent Street. The modifications resulted from a study commissioned by the former City of Ottawa and Region of Ottawa-Carleton, undertaken to develop a traffic-calming plan for Centretown. After an extensive public consultation process, a final design was developed and approved by the Region’s Transportation Committee and adopted by Regional Council last May. read more

Harb concerned about homeless

I am writing in response to the editorial that appeared Nov. 10 in Centretown News concerning Mac Harb and the issue of homelessness. As a housing and homelessness advocate, I found the article inconsistent with my knowledge of Mac Harb.

Homelessness does exist in Ottawa and we are all aware of the seriousness of the crisis. In fact, the Region of Ottawa-Carleton was one of the first cities to declare homelessness a national disaster! read more

Trustee ‘not supportive’

The article about the candidates for school board trustee and school closures (page 3, Oct. 27) indicates that parents who don’t want downtown schools closed will have their trustee on side, no matter what.

As an Elgin Street public school parent who has been involved in the school closure struggle, I know who supports Centretown school and who doesn’t. Our current trustee, Albert Chambers, has done little to help Elgin or other Centretown schools and not been very successful in his own backyard. McNabb school was closed in round one and this time he lost both Devonshire and Elmdale . read more
