Fire displaces four, leaves $200,000 in damages

A fire last night at 504 Gladstone Ave. has left four people homeless and damages estimated around $200,000.

Five units of the building were affected by the fire, which firefighters say began on the ground floor. The multi-unit building houses businesses on the ground floor and apartments on the upper level, according to the Ottawa Fire Twitter account.

The cause of the fire is still not known.

The fire began shortly after 6 p.m., and firefighters had it under control by about 6:45 p.m, according to the Twitter account. There have been no reports of injuries.

Lyon Street was closed at Florence Street and Gladstone Avenue was closed between Bay and Kent streets for a short period of time, but reopened to traffic after firefighters had the fire under control.

Ottawa’s Salvation Army and Red Cross were dispatched to help the victims of the fire.
